Coffin and Jane (Vincent) Coffin. He studied at Cortland Academy and the Charlottesville Seminary. At seventeen he went to New York to be a salesman for a mercantile house, and two years later, in 1855, he became the New York representative of a prominent Connecticut manufacturing firm.
